Product Details

MEFTAL 500 MG Tablet is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medicine used to treat pain associated with conditions like gout, rheumatoid arthritis, sprains of muscles and joints etc. It is also used to relieve pain and cramps during menstrual periods.

 

Indications:

  • Acute Pain
  • Dysmenorrhea (pain and cramps associated with menstrual disorders)

Dosage:

  • Initial 500 mg PO once, Then 250 mg PO q6hr PRN usually not to exceed 7 days for acute pain and 3 days for dysmenorrhea.

Onset of Action: The effect of this medicine can be observed within 20-30 minutes of administration.

Duration of Action: The effect of this medicine lasts for an average duration of 4- 6 hours.

 

Side Effects:

  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Bloating
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears
  • Blurred vision
  • Weight gain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Swelling of face, lips, eyelids, tongue, hands and feet
  • Peeling and blistering of skin
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Yellow colored eyes or skin
  • Difficult or painful urination
  • Bloody and cloudy urine
  • Excessive tiredness

Interactions:

  1. Interactions with Medicines: Moderate to severe Interaction with following medicines Glimepiride, Methotrexate, Propranolol, Ramipril, Tacrolimus, Warfarin, Furosemide, Aspirin, Ketorolac, Immune globulin (intravenous), Spironolactone.
  2. Interaction with Diseases:
    Asthma: Use of this medicine should be avoided in patients suffering from aspirin sensitive asthma. It should be used with caution in patients suffering from other forms of asthma or broncho-obstructive disorders.
    Fluid Retention and edema: This medicine should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing fluid retention disorder. Fluid retention can be attributed to other conditions like hypertension, heart failure etc. Therapy with this medicine should begin only after these risk factors are ruled out.
    Gastro-Intestinal toxicity: This medicine or other NSAIDs should be taken after consulting a doctor especially if the intended duration is longer than a month. Any symptom indicating ulceration and bleeding like chronic indigestion, appearance of coffee colored dry blood in stools or vomiting of blood should be reported immediately.
    Skin rash and peeling: This medicine can cause these fatal skin allergies without any warnings. Signs and symptoms like rashes, hives, fever or other allergic symptoms should be reported without any delay. This condition requires immediate medical intervention.
    Impaired kidney function: This medicine should be taken after consulting a doctor if you are having a kidney disease. Suitable adjustment in dosage and monitoring of kidney functions is required in such situations. It should not be used if the impairment is severe.
    Impaired liver function: This medicine should be used with caution in patients having an impairment of liver function. Suitable dose adjustments and monitoring of liver function are recommended in such cases.
  3. Interaction with Foods: Information not available.
  4. Interaction with Labs: For diazo test for determination of urinary bile content can potentially yield a false positive result.

Contraindications:

  • Allergy: This medicine is not recommended for use if you have a known history of allergy to mefenamic acid or other medicines of the NSAID class.
  • Other allergic conditions: This medicine is not recommended for use if you have a allergic condition like asthma, urticaria, or any other allergic condition.
  • Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) :This medicine is not recommended for use if you have undergone coronary artery bypass surgery recently.

Warnings: 

  • Effect on heart: Use of this medicine for a long duration may cause fluid retention and heart failure. It should be administered with caution in patients suffering from a disease of the heart or blood vessels or patients exposed to the risk factors.
  • Asthma: Use of this medicine can cause an acute attack of asthma to occur especially in patients with a history of aspirin sensitivity. It should be used with extreme caution in such cases.
  • Peptic ulcer: This medicine should be used with caution in patients suffering from peptic ulcer or other diseases of the gastrointestinal tract.
  • Allergic skin reaction: Use of this medicine can cause a series of allergic skin reaction (Stevens-Johnson syndrome or toxic epidermal necrolysis). It should be stopped immediately if signs of a skin allergy are observed.
  • Pregnancy: This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless potential benefits outweigh the risks associated. Contact your doctor before using this medicine. It should not be used during the third trimester of pregnancy.
  • Lactation: Use of this medicine in breastfeeding women is not recommended as the amount passing through the milk and its effect on the infant is unknown. Your doctor may prescribe a safer alternative in such cases.
  • Safety with alcohol: Avoid or limit the uptake of alcohol while using this medicine. Contact your doctor immediately if blood is observed in the stool, cough, or vomit.

General Instructions:

  • Take the tablet as instructed by the doctor.
  • Do not take in larger or smaller quantities than recommended.
  • The dosage and the duration of use of this medicine should be kept as low as possible.
  • This medicine should be taken with food.
  • An adequate amount of water should be consumed while taking this medicine.

Storage Conditions:

  • Store at room temperature between 68-77 degrees F (20-25 degrees C).
  • Store away from light and moisture.
  • Brief storage between 59-86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C) is permitted.
  • Do not store in the bathroom.
  • Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
