Product Details

AMLOD 5mg Tab is used to treat high blood pressure and other heart complications. The medicine should be taken in conjunction with a proper diet and regular exercise. It is also used in managing chest pain. Amlodipine belongs to a class of drugs known as calcium channel blockers. It works by relaxing blood vessels so blood can flow more easily.

Indications:

  • Treat high blood pressure in combination with a thiazide diuretic, alpha blocker, beta blocker, or an angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitor.
  • Prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
  • Prevent certain types of chest pain (angina) as monotherapy or in combination with other antianginal medicinal products.

Dosage:

ADULT: For both hypertension and angina the usual initial dose is 5 mg Amlodipine once daily which may be increased to a maximum dose of 10 mg depending on the individual patient's response.
CHILDREN: The recommended antihypertensive oral dose in paediatric patients ages 6-17 years is 2.5 mg once daily as a starting dose, up-titrated to 5 mg once daily if blood pressure goal is not achieved after 4 weeks.

Onset of Action: The effect of this medicine can be observed within 2 hours of administration of the dose.

Duration of Action: The effect of this medicine lasts for an average duration of approximately 24 hours.

Side Effects:

  • Swelling in foots and ankle
  • Feeling tired
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea and vomiting

Interactions:

  • Alfuzocin may enhance the hypotensive effect
  • Calcium salts may diminish the therapeutic effects of amlodipine
  • Carbamazepine may increase the metabolism of amlodipine
  • Amlodipine may diminish the therapeutic effect of clopidogrel
  • May enhance the orthostatic hypotensive effect of duloxetine

Contraindications:

  • Hypersensitivity to dihydropyridine derivatives, amlodipine or any of the excipients
  • Severe hypotension
  • Shock (including cardiogenic shock)
  • Obstruction of the outflow tract of the left ventricle (e.g. high grade aortic stenosis)
  • Haemodynamically unstable heart failure after acute myocardial infarction

Warnings:

  • Cardiac failure: Patients with heart failure should be treated with caution. In a long-term, placebo controlled study in patients with severe heart failure (NYHA class III and IV) the reported incidence of pulmonary oedema was higher in the amlodipine treated group than in the placebo group . Calcium channel blockers, including amlodipine, should be used with caution in patients with congestive heart failure, as they may increase the risk of future cardiovascular events and mortality.
  • Hepatic impairment : The half life of amlodipine is prolonged and AUC values are higher in patients with impaired liver function; dosage recommendations have not been established. Amlodipine should therefore be initiated at the lower end of the dosing range and caution should be used, both on initial treatment and when increasing the dose. Slow dose titration and careful monitoring may be required in patients with severe hepatic impairment.
  • Elderly: In the elderly increase of the dosage should take place with care .
  • Renal impairment: Amlodipine may be used in such patients at normal doses. Changes in amlodipine plasma concentrations are not correlated with degree of renal impairment. Amlodipine is not dialyzable.
  • Pregnancy: If this drug is used during pregnancy, or if the patient becomes pregnant while taking this drug, the patient should be apprised of the potential harm to the fetus.
  • Lactation: Use is not recommended.
  • Safe with alcohol, interaction with alcohol is unknown. It is advisable to consult your doctor before consumption.
