GLYCOMET SR 850 MG Tablet is an effective first choice medicine used to control high blood glucose levels in patients with type II diabetes. Patients are advised to maintain a strict exercise and diet regimen along with this medicine to get the best possible effect. It helps in minimizing the risk of diabetesassociated complications such as blindness, kidney damage, stroke and heart attack.

 

Indications:

  • Type II Diabetes Mellitus 

Dosage:

  • Initial dose: PO 500 mg bid, increase by 500 mg (max, 2500 mg/day in divided doses).
  • If the dose is missed, take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.
  • If overdose, contact a doctor immediately. Some over dosages could lead to lactic acidosis which requires immediate medical intervention.

Onset of Action: The peak effect of this medicine can be observed within 1-3 hours of administration.

Duration of Action: The effect of this medicine lasts for an average duration of 4 to 6 hours.

 

Side Effects:

  • Lactic acidosis
  • Hypoglycemia
  • Heart burn
  • Runny nose
  • Weakness
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

Interactions:

  1. Interaction with Medicines:
    > Acetazolamide may enhance the adverse effect of metformin.
    > Chlorothiazide may diminish the effect of metformin.
    > Danazol may diminish the therapeutic effect of metformin.
    > Gliclazide may enhance the hypoglycemic effect of metformin. 
    > Tacrolimus may diminish the therapeutic effects of metformin.

 

Contraindications:

  • Renal disease or dysfunction: Serum creatinine > 1.5 mg/dL in males or > 1.4 mg/dL in females or abnormal SCr
  • Conditions which predispose to renal dysfunction (eg, cardiovascular collapse, acute MI, septicemia)
  • In patients undergoing radiologic studies involving parenteral administration of iodinated contrast material (potential to acutely alter renal function)
  • Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis
  • Diabetic ketoacidosis

Warnings:

  • Lactic Acidosis: This medicine may cause lactic acidosis, which may be fatal, in some patients. This risk is especially higher in patients suffering from heart diseases, kidney diseases, etc. Report any unusual symptoms to the doctor immediately. Replacement with a suitable alternative may be required based on the clinical condition.
  • Kidney disease: This medicine should be used with caution in patients with a known history of kidney disease due to the increased risk of worsening of the patient's condition. Appropriate dose adjustments or replacement with a suitable alternative may be required based on the clinical condition.
  • Stress: Use of this medicine should be discontinued in patients exposed to stressful conditions such as a fever, trauma, surgeries, or accidents since it may not be effective in controlling blood sugar levels in these conditions. Replacement with a suitable alternative should be considered under your doctor's supervision.
  • Type I Diabetes: This medicine is not recommended for use in patients suffering from Type I Diabetes since it is not effective in treating such patients.
  • Diarrhea: This medicine may cause diarrhea when therapy is initiated. In most cases, diarrhea subsides by itself. Contact your doctor if the problem persists for longer durations. Therapy may need to be discontinued in some cases based on the clinical conditions.
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency: This medicine should be used with extreme caution in patients with vitamin B12 deficiency since it may worsen the patient's condition. Appropriate vitamin B12 supplementation and dose adjustments may be required in some cases.
  • Pregnancy: This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine. Your doctor may prescribe a safer alternative based on your clinical condition.
  • Lactation:This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. All the risks and benefits should be discussed with the doctor before taking this medicine. Your doctor may advise you to discontinue breastfeeding or to discontinue the drug based on your clinical condition.
  • Safety with Alcohol: Consumption of alcohol is not recommended during treatment with this medicine due to the increased risk of serious adverse effects.

General Instructions:

  • Take tablet as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Your dose is likely to change over time based on therapeutic response and clinical condition.
  • Regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is recommended during treatment with this medicine.
  • You should always carry a sugar candy with you to counteract unexpected lowering of blood sugar levels.
  • Do not change the dose or duration of use without consulting your doctor.

Storage Conditions:

  • Store at room temperature, under 77°F (25ºC).
  • Keep it away from high temperatures.
