Product Details

AMARYL 2mg tablet is a long-acting oral anti-diabetic which lowers the blood sugar level. It is used only in patients diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. It may be used along with Insulin or other medicines in order to achieve better control over the blood sugar levels. This medicine, when taken along with a controlled diet and regular exercise routine, may give better results.

 

Indications:

  • Type II Diabetes Mellitus

Dosage:

  • ADULTS: PO 1 to 2 mg qd with breakfast or the first main meal of the day. Increase by 1 to 2 mg/dose. Titrate at 1 to 2 week intervals based on blood glucose response.
    Maintenance: 1 and 4 mg daily (maximum 8 mg/day).
  • Combination therapy with insulin is appropriate for secondary failure to oral sulfonylureas.

Onset of Action: The effect of this medicine can be observed within an hour of oral administration. However, it takes 2-4 hours for the medicine to reach its peak effect.

Duration of Action: The effect of this medicine lasts for an average of 24 hours

 

Side Effects:

  • Hypoglycemia
  • Elevated liver enzymes
  • Anemia
  • Jaundice

Interactions:

  1. Interactions with Medicines:Severe interactions with miconazole, gatifloxacin.
  2. Interactions with Diseases: Extreme caution should be taken in patients suffering from heart disease, liver disease, kidney disease, hemolytic anemia or Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency patients due to increased risk of severe adverse effects.

 

Contraindications:

  • Allergy: This medicine is not recommended for use by patients with a known history of allergy to Glimepride or any other agents belonging to the Sulphonamide class of antidiabetic medicines.

Warnings:

  1. Hypoglycemia: Glimepiride can cause moderate to severe lowering of blood glucose levels. The risks are even greater in elderly, malnourished, people with kidney and pituitary gland disorders.
  2. Stress: Use of this medicine should be discontinued in patients exposed to stressful conditions such as a fever, trauma, surgeries, or accidents since it may not be effective in controlling blood sugar levels in these conditions.
  3. Liver/Kidney disease: Glimepiride should be administered with caution in patients with a disorder of kidney and/or liver.
  4. Fluid Retention: Glimepiride can cause retention of fluid in some cases that may lead to severe and harmful effects on the body.
  5. Heart Disease: Glimepiride can cause heart-related complications especially if you have an active disease of the heart.
  6. Weight gain: This medicine may cause a mild to moderate weight gain in some patients.
  7. Hemolytic Anemia: Glimepiride can cause hemolytic anemia if you have a rare genetic disorder called Glucose-6-Phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
  8. Photo-sensitivity: Glimepiride may cause allergic skin reactions when exposed to the sun. Take precautionary skin protection measures while going out into sun if you are taking this medicine.
  9. Pregnancy: This medicine is not recommended for use in pregnant women unless absolutely necessary
  10. Lactation: This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary.
  11. Safety with alcohol: Consumption of alcohol in large quantities is not recommended when you are taking glimepiride for controlling blood sugar levels. It is recommended to reduce the alcohol intake so that the incidence of adverse effects can be reduced.

 

General Instructions:

  • Take the medicine as directed by your doctor.
  • Follow the instructions mentioned on the label.
  • The medicine should be taken orally with breakfast or the first meal of the day.
  • Adequate amount of water should be consumed while taking this medication.

Storage Conditions:

  • Store at room temperature, under 77°F (25ºC).
  • Keep it away from high temperatures.
