Product Details

PRIMOLUT N 5 MG TAB is a synthetic form of progestin and has a similar action to the female hormone, progesterone. It is used to treat menstrual disorders and abnormal vaginal bleeding in women caused due to hormonal imbalances. It is also used for birth control to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

 

Indications:

  • Endometrial cancer
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Amenorrhoea
  • Contraception
  • Premenstrual syndrome
  • Breast cancer

Dosage:

  • Contraception: 1 tablet PO qDay, take at same time each day; use additional contraception x 48 hours if dose >3 hours late.
  • Dysfunctional uterine bleeding:  1 tablet three times daily for 10 days
  • Endometriosis: 1 tablet three times daily for a minimum treatment period of six months. 
  • Postponement of menstruation: 1 tablet three times daily, starting three days before the expected onset of menstruation.

Onset of action: The time taken for this medicine to show it's effect is subject to vary from one person to another. It also varies based on the intended use and levels of other sex hormones in the body.

Duration of action: The time duration for which this medicine remains effective in the body is subject to vary based on the intended use and quantity consumed.

 

Side effects:

  • Loss of vision or blurred vision
  • Bulging of eyes
  • Migraine like headaches
  • Difficulty in breathing
  • Presence of blood in cough
  • Sharp or crushing pain in chest
  • Dizziness and fainting
  • Swelling of face, lips, eyelids, tongue, hands and feet 
  • Yellowing of skin and eyes
  • Depressed mood
  • Difficulty in swallowing

Interactions:

  1. Interaction with Medicines: Severe to moderate interactions with Carbamazepine, Clarithromycin, Divalproex, Mycophenolate Mofetil, Phenytoin, Tranexamic Acid, Insulin, Aminophylline, Phenobarbital, Griseofulvin.
  2. Interaction with Diseases:
    Hepatic neoplasms: Use of this medicine as an oral contraceptive is not recommended in a patient suffering from a liver tumor. The risk of adverse effects are significantly high and hence extreme caution is advised.
    Depression: Use of this medicine has been reported to cause an increase in the incidence of depression. It should be used with caution if the patient has a history of depression with close monitoring of the signs and symptoms.
    Fluid Retention and edema: Use of this medicine has been associated with increased incidence of fluid retention in the body. It should be used with caution in patients having a fluid retention disorder or are exposed to the risk factors.
    > Retinal thrombosis: Use of this medicine can cause a disturbance in vision and other problems in the eyes. It should be used with caution in patients suffering from a pre-existing eye disease. Use of this medicine should be stopped immediately if a visual disturbance is observed.

  • Heart and blood vessel disorder

Warnings: 

  • Fluid retention: Use of this medicine is known to cause mild to moderate amounts of fluid retention in the body. Hence, caution is advised while administering in patients with diseases like epilepsy, asthma, migraine, heart and blood vessel disorders, kidney impairment etc.
  • Depression: Use of this medicine is known to cause a varying amount of depression in different individuals. It should be carefully prescribed in patients having a history of depression. Use of this medicine should be discontinued if the depressive episode becomes more frequent and severe.
  • Vision abnormalities: Use of this medicine can cause blurring of vision and other effects on the eye like proptosis, diplopia etc. Patients should be carefully examined to confirm if they can safely use this medicine. Any side effects like blurred vision, excessive drying of eyes should be reported to the doctor.
  • Blood clotting disorder: Use of this medicine can cause the formation of a blood clot in the artery or a deep vein (thromboembolism) resulting in severe to fatal adverse effects. The use of this medicine should be stopped if any such condition is confirmed.
  • Diabetes: Use of this medicine can affect the blood glucose levels and hence caution is advised while treating a diabetic patient.
  • Irregular menstrual bleeding: Use of this medicine may cause irregularities in the menstrual cycle. Suitable tests should be performed to rule out other caused if an episode or irregular bleeding occurs while using this medicine.
  • Surgery: Use of this medicine should stop at least 4 weeks before a planned surgery or prolonged immobilization.
  • Pregnancy: This medicine is not recommended for use if you are pregnant or planning a pregnancy in near future. Contact your doctor immediately if a pregnancy is suspected while using this medicine.
  • Lactation: This medicine is not recommended for use in breastfeeding women unless absolutely necessary. It is advised to stop breastfeeding before starting the treatment course with this medicine.
  • Safety with alcohol: Interaction with alcohol is unknown. It is advisable to consult your doctor before consumption.

General Instructions: 

  • Take Norethisterone as prescribed by the doctor.
  • Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts than prescribed.
  • It is recommended to use additional means of contraception to prevent any unwanted pregnancies while taking this medicine.

  • Store at room temperature.
  • Keep away from sunlight.
